What happens when you have an MRI scan?

What is an MRI scan?

MRI stands for ‘Magnetic Resonance Imaging’ and uses radio waves and a robust magnetic flux to make highly detailed images of inside the physical body. Whereas X-ray based tests are excellent at watching bone, MRI is especially useful for capturing very accurate images of any tissue within the body that contains many water molecules, including muscle, nerves, and the other ‘soft tissues’.

Are MRI scans safe?

Yes. aside from being stronger, the magnetic fields and radio waves utilized in MRI scans are not any different from those that surround us in day-to-day life. like all kinds of medical scans, however, there are some important safety measures that require to be taken – like removing jewelry, an equivalent as you’d do before an X-ray – but you’ll tend a security checklist to finish and your radiographer will undergo this with you before your scan.

What happens during an MRI scan?

As mentioned above, once you arrive for your scan, you’ll tend a checklist to finishthis may ensure your radiographer is fully informed of any relevant medical record (such as whether you've got a pacemaker fitted), which all necessary safety measures are in situ (such as removing your jewelry). you'll find more information on this over on our Patient Journey page.

Your radiographer will ask you about the method before the scan starts. counting on which area of the body is being scanned, you'll be asked to vary into a gown (this isn’t generally required for brain scans), before your radiographer helps you get into position on the scanner table and ensure you’re comfortable.

MRI scans last anywhere from 15-90 minutes. When You going For Mri Centre in Chandigarh to be ready to advise on this before yours starts. You won’t feel anything while the scan is occurring but MRI scanners are noisy – this is often completely normal and just means the scanner is functioning as it’s meant to and you’ll tend ear guards to wear. It’s important to stay as still as possible during the scan, however, you’ll be given an emergency buzzer which you'll press at any time if you would like to.

In some circumstances, a contrast dye injection is required part way through the scan. this is often very routine and zip to stress about, as our article – MRI contrast: Is there a requirement to worry? – explains.

Preparing for your scan

On the day of your scan, you'll eat and drink as normal. As you’ll be asked to get rid of jewelry, it’s an honest idea to not wear anything to the clinic that you simply don’t feel comfortable keeping within the lockers we offer.

MRI scans are very safe and that we perform multiple scans a day – but we understand that some people can feel anxious beforehand. Reading abreast of what to expect can really help in terms of feeling calm, alongside asking a lover or partner to accompany you to the clinic if you wish.

Queen Square also has an especially wide MRI scanner which may be helpful for people that have claustrophobia.
