Magnetic Resonance Imaging is a modern tool for the scanning of our body. By the use of radio waves, a powerful magnet and a computer, an MRI machine produces hi-resolution detailed images of the insides of your body.

During the procedure, doctors make you sleep on a moveable bed that would be going inside the MRI scanner. This machine is having surrounding of the circular magnet and appears like a tube-like structure. It does not involve any radiation exposure as the scanner works on magnetic fields.

MRI scans reveal a more clear difference between healthy and diseased tissue than any other tool. Also, it gives out the necessary information about internal organs, spine, joints and brain. Without any side effect, it is ideal for early detection and assists in the right treatment of disease.

5 Things to remember before getting an MRI scan

  • You should choose the MRI machine of minimum 1.5 T scanner

If getting an examination by poor-quality MRI i.e. below 1.5 T scanner, it may miss crucial details about life-threatening lesions or tumours. So you should ask for the MRI machine above 1.5 T only to be safe from a failure of diagnoses though it does not cost much.
  • Avoid going with metal nearby MRI machine containing a powerful magnet
It can lead to dangerous and fatal consequences if going with metal nearby MRI machine. So we suggest you take away your mobile phones, jewellery, watches and other metal items before going inside the MRI room.

Get double-checking by your radiologist or technician before entering. It would be safe for you to inform the centre beforehand if you have an implant, pacemaker or brain aneurysm. These medical devices can have interference with a magnet inside the machine
.
  • Do not get claustrophobia in fringe MRI scan.
If claustrophobic, you may hesitate to go inside the machine for scanning. In case you are nervous, take heart and control your nerves. Also, technology can aid you in managing your fear.

The illusion of more space and light, over 90% of claustrophobic patients do not require sedation. However, you have the option of choosing sedation, on feeling claustrophobic.
